Green Lipstick in the Woods
My favorite place to be—other than my home—is the woods. I live near the only natural woods left in New York City and—though they’re exactly the kinds of woods you would expect to find in the city—they’re beautiful and majestic nonetheless. In spring and fall the ground becomes dotted with mushrooms, ripe for foraging. In autumn, the trees become a radiant rainbow. In the summer the trees come alive with cicadas and skunks, rabbits, and wild turkeys come out of the shadows. In winter, the snow is barely touched by people.
I love sitting on the highest hill in wintertime and looking out over the neighborhood and the Hudson River.
One of my favorite things about my forest are the perfectly formed structures that we find. No one seems to know who builds them or why, but we spend a lot of time exploring them.
Along with my love of the forest is my love of green. It’s one of two favorite colors I’ve had since I was very little. I go through phases when all I want to wear is green.
As a kid, I had blue eyes, with just a little yellow around my pupils. As I got older the yellow spread and my eyes turned green. I was so excited to see the green spreading across my eyes and now they’re one of my favorite features. I love to wear green lipstick to match my eyes.
