My Pirate's Cove
I would describe my design style as “mid century modern meets Victorian.” I love clean lines mixed with a the architectural details from the Victorian era.
A couple years ago we rented a lovely brownstone apartment in BedStuy Brooklyn with a few of our friends. It had the perfect little nook for me to make my little pirate’s cove.
I’m a firm believer in displaying hobbies. Anything can be made beautiful if you arrange it just in just the right way. I have a large collection of feathers that I keep in mason jars so I can see them, keep them safe, and also display them. I also keep beads and buttons in jars and my cat’s dry food is hidden in an owl cookie jar.
My father is a prop maker and if there’s anything I’ve leaned from him it’s that any prop can become part of your home. I bought that blunderbuss and made the tricorn hat for an Anne Dieu le Veut pirate costume and now use them as displays. I take them down once in a while when a friend shows up to a Halloween party without a costume. Even all these years later, I still love looking at them.
The display rule doesn’t just apply to hobbies, you can make a display out of anything. I keep my vitamins in apothecary jars, so I can keep them out without having to look at their ugly packaging.
